TOEFL iBTスピーキングで27点を獲得した私が対策とコツを紹介

Task 3の概要

まずはTOEFL iBTスピーキングのTask 3の概要を理解しましょう。

Task 3は「読む」「聞く」「書く」の複数の技能が問われているため、integrated問題と呼ばれます。内容は、まずは大学のキャンパスに関連する120字程度のリーディングを45～50秒で読み、次にそれについて男女の学生2人の会話を聞きます。

この会話では基本的に片方がリーディングの内容に対する自分の意見を2つ述べ、もう片方の学生は聞き役であることがほとんどです。

リーディングとリスニングが終わったら30秒で回答の準備を行い、60秒でスピーキングを行います。

Task 3で聞かれる内容は必ず、「リーディングの内容に対する学生の意見」です。

つまり、リーディングとリスニングの内容を要約する問題です。

問題の例
The man expresses his opinion of the Student Association’s recent purchase. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding this opinion.

Task 3のスコアの付け方

TOEFL iBTスピーキングの採点は全セクション共通で4点満点で行われます。点数の目安は、全6問で4点取れば30点、3点で23点、2点で15点、1点で8点です（ETSによる情報）。

そして対策をしやすいように採点のアプローチについても知っておきましょう。

採点はHolistic approach （全体アプローチ）と呼ばれ、スピーキングの回答全体をみて採点が行われます。

Task 3であれば60秒間話しているもの全体で、3点なのか4点なのかというものが決定され、文法や単語のミスの数をベースとした減点などは行われません。それゆえ、スピーキングの途中でミスをしてもあまり気にしすぎないでください。あくまで全体評価です。

Task 3での評価項目は以下の3つです。これもTOEFLスピーキングで全task共通です。

・Delivery（流れ、発音、ペース、イントネーション等）
・Language use（文法と単語）
・Topic development（内容）

それぞれ簡単に見ていきましょう。

Delivery

Deliveryは途中で止まらず、良い発音で良いフローでスピーキングできるかが評価されます。ここで点数を稼ぐには普段から発音記号と音の法則（音の脱落、繋がりなど）の知識をベースとして英語学習を進める必要があります。

Topic development

最後のTopic developmentでは質問で聞かれていることに対してしっかり答えられているのかを評価しています。

Task 3の問題では、例えば

The man expresses his opinion of the Student Association’s recent purchase. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding this opinion.

という問題であれば、必ず以下4つの内容がスピーキングに入っていないといけません。

リーディングの内容
それに対する学生の意見
学生の理由1
学生の理由2

この4つを必ず含める必要があります。後で紹介するテンプレートは、この全ての要素を確実にスピーキングに含めることが出来るように設計されています。詳しくは後ほど。

Task 3の具体的な対策とコツ

それでは具体的に私がTOEFL iBTスピーキングで27点獲得したときのTask 3の対策とコツを見ていきましょう。

リーディング

リーディングの内容

Task 3の最初のステップはリーディングです。以下ETSのサンプル問題です。

The Northfield College Student Association recently decided to make a new purchase. Read the following announcement in the college newspaper about the decision.

Good News for Movie Fans
The Student Association has just purchased a new sound system for the Old Lincoln Hall auditorium, the place where movies on campus are currently shown. By installing the new sound system, the Student Association hopes to attract more students to the movies and increase ticket sales. Before making the purchase of the new equipment, the Student Association conducted a survey on campus to see what kind of entertainment students liked best. Going to the movies ranked number one. “Students at Northfield College love going to the movies” said the president of the Student Association, “so we decided to make what they already love even better. We’re confident that the investment into the sound system will translate into increased ticket sales.”

これを45～50秒で読むことになります。

リーディングの内容は必ずでは大学が新しい音響を導入したとか、大学が新しい入学システムを開始したとか、なんらかの「キャンパスでの変化」についてです。そしてそれに対して2つの理由があります。

ノートテイキング～Task 3 リーディング

リーディングの内容は

・キャンパスでの変化
・変化の理由1
・変化の理由2

の3つでしたね。リーディング中はスクラッチペーパーにこの3つの情報を書き留めましょう。

そしてそれぞれ読みながら埋めていきます。
今回の場合

キャンパス変化：The Student Association has just purchased a new sound system for the Old Lincoln Hall auditorium
理由1：Attract more students to the movies and increase ticket sales.
理由2：Students at Northfield College love going to the movies

ですね。

この書き留める3つの情報の中で一番重要なのは「キャンパスの変化」です。ここで書き留める内容は、あとで使うスピーキングテンプレートに直接はめ込むことになるので、必ずスクラッチペーパーに書いておくようにしてください。

2つの理由は、リスニングを聞きやすくするためのものなので、時間が無く書き留められなくても大きな問題になることはありません。

リスニング

リスニングの内容

リスニングでは、リーディングの内容に関する男女の学生の会話で、片方の学生がそれについて賛成か反対かを述べ、その理由を2つ挙げます。以下ETSのサンプル問題です。

(Male student) I really think the Student Association made a bad decision.
(Female student) Really? Why? Don’t you like going to the movies?
(Male student) Sure I do. But this new purchase is just a waste of money.

(Male student) Yeah, well, I’m sure it does, but, in Old Lincoln Hall? I mean that building must be 200 years old! It used to be the college gym! The acoustics are terrible. (Female student) So you’re saying there’ll be no improvement?
(Male student) That’s right. And also, I seriously doubt that going to the movies is the number one social activity for most students.

ノートテイキング～Task 3 リスニング

内容は必ず1人の学生の意見と理由2つなので、これらをスクラッチペーパーに書きとめましょう。

今回のリスニングの例だと

意見：Student Association made a bad decision
理由1：Just a waste of money

The building is 200 years old
It used to be the college gym
The acoustics are terrible
There’ll be no improvement

理由2：Doubt that going to the movies is the number one social activity for most students.

There isn’t much to do on campus besides go to the movies.
If there were other forms of recreation, or other social activities, most students would not have said that going to the movies was their first choice.

リーディングの内容について（約9秒）

例えば

The reading states that the Student Association has just purchased a new sound system for the Old Lincoln Hall auditorium.

といった感じです。先y4どとったスクラッチペーパーの内容がそのまま文章の中に入ってきていますね。

学生の意見（6秒）

次に学生の意見について一文で話します。例えば

The man’s opinion is that it was a wrong decision. He provides mainly two reasons.

これくらいシンプルでOKです。

学生の理由1（約21秒）

次に1つ目の理由を述べます。

First, he thinks that it is just a waste of money. He says the building used to be the college gym and the building must be 200 years old. Because of that, the acoustics are terrible, and he believes there will be no improvement after installing a new sound system.

学生の理由2（約21秒）

次に2つ目の理由を述べます。

Second, he believes going to the movies ranked number one as students’ entertainment activity just because there isn’t anything else to do on campus. He believes if there were other forms of recreation, students wouldn’t have said that it was their first choice, and so he thinks the results of the survey is not reliable.

コンクルージョン（約3秒）

最後にthat’s why …と言って締めくくりましょう。

That’s why he thinks it was not the right decision.

こんな感じです。これはマストではないので、時間がなければ省略しましょう。

結構難しそうですよね。ただ後で紹介するテンプレートを暗記することで、確実に本番で言うべき内容を含んだスピーチが言えるようになりますので、安心してくださいね。

30秒間の準備時間の効率的な使い方

次は実際に話す前にある30秒間の準備時間の使い方についてお話します。
この時間では、あとで紹介するテンプレートの内容と、それに当てはめる内容をスクラッチペーパー上でチェックしましょう。

しっかりと準備時間にメモしたどの情報を言うか決めておくことで、スピーキング時の無駄な混乱を避けることができます。

Task 3のテンプレート

ここではTask3のスピーキングで使えるテンプレートをご紹介します。この部分は全て丸暗記することで一気に対策しやすくなります。
そしてテンプレートのスペースにスクラッチペーパーで書いた内容を埋め込んで、それをスピーキングするようにしてください。こうすると、確実に含めるべき内容を含んだスピーキングを行うことができるようになります。
